As EU regulations tighten around food packaging, talk about reusable systems is gaining momentum across the food and hospitality industry. But how feasible is reuse in practice – and what do businesses need to prepare for?
Did you miss our latest Verive Talk webinar?
At our recent Verive Talk Live, two expert voices in sustainability and packaging innovation – Siem Haffmans (Partners for Innovation) and Jelle Smit (Bunzl Retail & Industry) – shared their insights on upcoming packaging regulations, and offered practical advice for businesses to effectively prepare for the future.
Here’s what you need to know:
Insight #1: Regulation is driving change: Start preparing now
The EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is set to reshape the packaging landscape — and businesses need to get ready. From February 2027, foodservice businesses must allow customers to bring their own reusable packaging for on-site consumption. And from February 2028, a wash-and-reuse system must be in place for takeaway food and drinks.
“The long-term direction is clear: packaging must be reusable, recyclable, and minimized where possible. And compliance won’t be an option.”
— Siem Haffmans, Circular Economy Expert
In addition to the PPWR, other EU and non-EU regulations also impact the food packaging you can use today and in the future. One example is the Single-Use Plastics Directive, which has been in effect across EU member states since July 2021.
Insight #2: Reusable products require a reusable packaging system
“Implementing reusables isn’t as simple as just replacing the hardware,” Jelle pointed out. “You have to consider logistics, return models, maybe even deposits.”
It’s also important to note that reusables aren’t automatically the more sustainable option. Their impact depends on how well the system is set up and used. For example, return rates need to reach at least 80-90% depending on the reusable product and its disposable alternative to become a future-proof solution. You can learn more about return rates in our Life Cycle Assessment on reusables vs disposables.
The complexity of reusable systems makes it interesting to start experimenting early. Testing can help you understand what works best for your specific business, avoiding last-minute implementation chaos once regulations require it.
At Verive, we can support you finding the right fit for your business – whether fully reusable, or hybrid. We’re here to help you find the solution that works. Learn more about Verive 360 here or contact us.
Insight #3: There’s no one-size-fits-all: The right system depends on your business
There’s no one-size-fits-all in sustainability, nor is there one packaging system that works best for every environment. The best solution depends on your business model, location, operational setup, and the return rate that can be achieved.
Hybrid systems may be a solution: combining reusables where possible, while continuing to optimize single-use packaging. It all starts with understanding your operational reality. Our in-house experts can support you in this.
