What is polypropylene?

Polypropylene, or PP, is a highly versatile, durable and lightweight polymer widely used across various industries. Polypropylene properties include strength and adaptability, making it an ideal material for reusable food packaging. You may notice that all of our reusable coffee cups and most of the food containers, lids and portion pots are made of polypropylene.

Is PP a plastic?

Yes, PP is a type of synthetic plastic. Specifically, it’s a thermoplastic, which means it can be melted and remoulded multiple times without significant degradation.

How is it made?

PP plastic is produced from propylene gas through a process called polymerisation. In this process, propylene molecules are linked together into long chains, creating a material with distinct and beneficial properties.

Plastic, including PP, is not inherently bad. It’s an excellent material with a multitude of uses. The key to its responsible use lies in proper handling and end-of-life processing. By promoting recycling and reuse, we can leverage the advantages of PP while minimising its environmental impact.

Why does PP make good food packaging and tableware material?

Polypropylene offers several advantages when used in food packaging. It is non-toxic and safe for food contact as it doesn’t react with food or beverages. It is also durable, resisting moisture, oil, and chemicals, ensuring long-lasting use.

Polypropylene is used to make our reusable products.

Polypropylene uses extend to being lightweight, reducing shipping costs and the associated carbon footprint. Finally, it is heat-resistant, making it suitable for microwave and dishwasher use, adding convenience for consumers.

What is the best end-of-life option for PP?

Recycling is the ideal end-of-life option for PP. It can be reprocessed into new products, reducing waste and conserving resources. However, PP products can often be reused multiple times before being recycled, supporting a circular economy.

Does PP decompose and how should it be disposed of?

PP does not decompose quickly in the environment; it can take hundreds of years to break down. To prevent pollution, PP should be disposed of through proper recycling channels. And that is easily done in most European countries. That is why we love using PP in our products at Verive. Avoid littering or discarding it with regular rubbish to prevent environmental harm.

Is using PP environmentally responsible?

Using PP can be environmentally responsible if managed properly:

  • Recyclability: PP is highly recyclable, which can mitigate its environmental impact.
  • Longevity: Its long lifespan reduces the need for frequent replacements.

By focusing on responsible use and end-of-life processing, we can maximise PP’s benefits while minimising environmental harm.

What are the challenges of using PP?

Improper disposal can lead to pollution, as PP does not decompose easily. While recyclable, PP recycling rates are still low due to inadequate recycling infrastructure and public awareness. Additionally, the production of PP relies on non-renewable petroleum resources, contributing to environmental concerns.
